History of Darwin
Darwin was founded in 1869 and was originaly called Palmerston before being renmed Port Dawin in 1911 . The habour was dicoverd in 1839 by Captain of the Beagle, John Lort Strokes, who named it after shipmate,Brtish evolution Charles Darwin.

On 19 February 1942 mainland Australia came under attack for the first time when Japanese forces mounted two air raids on Darwin. The two attacks, which were planned and led by the commander responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbour ten weeks earlier, involved 54 land-based bombers and approximately 188 attack aircraft which were launched from four Japanese aircraft-carriers in the Timor Sea. In the first attack, which began just before 10.00 am, heavy bombers pattern-bombed the harbour and town, dive bombers escorted by Zero fighters then attacked shipping in the harbour, the military and civil aerodromes, and the hospital at Berrimah. The attack ceased after about 40 minutes. The second attack, which began an hour later, involved high altitude bombing of the Royal Australian Air Force base at Parap which lasted for 20 to 25 minutes. The two raids killed at least 243 people and between 300 and 400 were wounded. Twenty military aircraft were destroyed, eight ships at anchor in the harbour were sunk, and most civil and military facilities in Darwin were destroyed. On the 19 Febuary 1942, a fleet of 188 carrier borne Japanese aircraft dropped the first bombs on darwin, It killed 243 people and wounded 300 to 400. between febuary 1942 to october 1943, the japenese launched over 60 air raids.


The Northan territory was devistated on christmas eve 1974 when hit by a tropical weather depression called cyclone tracy as the eye of the storm passes over darwin between midnight and 7.00 am on Christmas morning torrential rain fell and the winds were officially recorded at 217 kilometres per hour prior to the Bureau of Meteorology anemometer being destroyed. Houses and other buildings disintegrated under the onslaught, accompanied by the sounds of flying debris and breaking glass. With the cyclone’s passing 65 people were killed and many more were injured, 70 per cent of Darwin’s homes were destroyed or suffered severe damage, and all public services communications, power, water and sewerage were severed.
